Our School Plan Progress 2018-2019

Improving Student Learning

The Abbotsford School District’s Strategic Plan reflects our public commitment to BC’s new curriculum by working together to continuously improve learning for each student.

School Goals

Under the Framework for Enhancing Student Learning, all Abbotsford School District schools are required to develop a long term plan to improve student achievement, one that maintains a balance on the intellectual, social and career development of students. Each year, each school develops an annual plan and sets individual goals to improve student achievement.

Blue Jay Elementary School Goals

Blue Jay Elementary School Plan - Academic Language Development

Based on math, writing and reading assessment gathered during the 2016-2017 school year, the Blue Jay Elementary staff articulated concern that students seem to be struggling to communicate their thinking or learning at a deeper level of understanding. The staff decided to focus the school goal on unpacking the curricular competencies to identify the academic (Tier 2) language that students need to be able to effectively communicate their learning.

Blue Jay teachers working hard as they 'dive in' to the Academic Language in our revised curriculum. Thank you to Michelle Gill, District ELL Helping Teacher, for facilitating a great day of learning!

Kindergarten Math Academic Vocabulary Development

Our students will learn key academic skills - like reading, writing and math - to encompass the knowledge and processes associated with intellectual development. As learners and meaning-makers, students take subject-specific concepts and content and transform them into a new understanding.

Literacy Development at Blue Jay Elementary - "Daily 5" Highlights

Many teachers at Blue Jay Elementary have incorporated the work of Boushey & Moser (commonly known as "The 2 Sisters") into their classroom routine to support literacy development. A "Daily 5" routine has students rotating between 5 targeted, individualized stations; "Read-to-Self", "Work-on-Writing", "Read-to-Someone", "Listen-to-Reading" and "Word-Work". This routine creates an environment where the teacher is then able to work with small groups of students, targeting specific areas of growth in their reading and writing development. Take a look at some of the amazing evidence of growth that is happening as a result!

Literacy Development at Blue Jay Elementary - "BLITZING" Highlights

Building on the work of Janet Mort, our Grade 1 to 3 teachers, with the support of our ELL and LSS team, provided daily, targeted, "Blitzing" games to work with our most at-risk students. We focused on Sight Word development for Term 1 and are currently doing a Guided Reading focus during our BLITZ time. Have a look at some of the interactive, fun, games that students engaged in as they were learning their sight words.

Human & Social

Our students will study personal and human social skills and as they relate to students' identity in the world - both as individuals and as members of their community. We are learning that personal and human social skills encompass the abilities students needs to thrive as individuals, to understand and care about themselves and others, and to find and achieve their purposes in the world.

Our students will succeed in a much different future from the one we envisioned 10 or 15 years ago. It is our responsibility to prepare all children for success in whatever life path they choose, connecting learning opportunities with future career possibilities. We know that real-life experiences - like community involvement, gaining business knowledge, and hands-on-learning - build better students and life-long citizens.
